Window Rock AZ what to do

Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a vast park in northeastern Arizona, on Navajo tribal lands. Its prominent features include Spider Rock spire, about 800-feet tall, and towering sandstone cliffs surrounding a verdant canyon. Inhabited by several Native American peoples for millennia, the area is dotted with prehistoric rock art. The White House Ruins and Mummy Cave are remains of ancient of ancient Pueblo villages.

SCENIC DRIVES: On your own, drive along two paved rim drives that lead to several overlooks which provide excellent views of the canyon below. Allow 2 hours to visit 3 overlooks on the North Rim Drive; best for morning photos. Allow 2 hours to visit 7 overlooks on the South Rim Drive; best for afternoon photos.

SELF GUIDED HIKE: On your own, drive about 6 miles up the South Rim to the one public hiking trail at the White House Overlook. Allow 2 hours round trip to hike about 600 feet down/up the switchback trail to the White House Ruin. Restrooms at overlook and bottom of trail. No pets allowed on the trail.

CANYON TOURS: Private companies offer canyon tours by hiking, horseback, or vehicle. Tours into the canyon requires a back country permit and hiring an authorized guide. No pets allowed on tours. Contact private companies directly for arrangements. Click here for Listing of Tour Companies.
