An incredible selection of ancient Indian ruins, stunning scenic attractions, and fascinating historic sites are within a 90-minute journey from your vacation headquarters in Gallup.

Gallup's numerous trading posts, galleries and shops offer a unique blend of Native American Culture with a rich abundance of authentic Indian and Southwest Hispanic arts and crafts. The landscape is beautiful beyond words, with red mesas to the north and east, and the mountains and painted deserts of Arizona to the west. No trip to the southwest is complete without experiencing this area of New Mexico.

Red Rock Park

Has an elevation of 7,000 feet and encompasses 640 acres. It offers a large campground equipped with electrical and water hookups, picnic areas, restrooms and showers.

Navajo code talker’s museum

Is the Navajo code still unbroken? This code that was developed for the Marine Corps served with success from 1942 to 1945. The complex and thoroughly detailed nature of the Navajo Code made it perfect for military use and was different from other Native American codes. Except for a close call, the Code was never broken.

Historic Route 66

A stroll down Route 66 will give you a sense of the historic and harmonious blend of cultures for which Gallup is well known. Route 66 and Coal Avenue are the principal sites of most gallery and trading post activity in the area.

Go Hiking

We started our first morning with a hike to Gallup Pyramid Rock. It's one of several hiking trails in Red Rock Park and most families should be able to hike it with little trouble. You'll be rewarded with gorgeous scenery and a bird's eye view of Gallup.

Some more fun ideas to do Sunday after the tournament :

  1. Hike the Church Rock trail for spectacular vistas of the surrounding landscape, it's a great, easy outing for all ages.
  2. Looking for a thrill, take a bike ride on our world class High Desert Mountain bike trails.
  3. Experience the Summer Nightly Indian Dances at the McKinley Courthouse Square Plaza. When was the last time you danced with Native Americans?
  4. A chance to get up, up and away with your entire family, float through the Red Rock Canyons in a hot air balloon.
  5. Visit our nine hand-painted mural located downtown, it's a fun way to explore Gallup's rich history, art, and culture.
  6. Enjoy a meal at the El Rancho and explore 1940’s & 50s movie memorabilia from the big movie stars of that era that stayed at this famous Route 66 hotel.
  7. Experience the charm of yesteryear, tour the fully restored 1928 El Morro Theatre or take in a movie or show.
  8. Snap pictures of the many freight trains passing through Gallup and notice that each whistle makes a different sound. It's a thrill to feel the ground rumble under your feet.
  9. Here is a chance to see and experience those things that make Gallup real and true, travel back in time with a drive along The Trail of the Ancients.
  10. Shop for Native American authentic jewelry at one of our many trading posts, you'll definitely find something to cherish.
